A Health Kick! A kick to inflammations bottom!

This is for all the ladies out there who are too busy being a Mom/ caregiver and don't spend enough time trying to take care of themselves....I was there, still working on it. We think we come last, kids first!! My Mom says, 'yes but if something should happen to you because you failed to take care of yourself, then your kids would be without a Mom.'

Ssoooo, I have been on a health kick. Been really excited for this new life, to feel good and have energy. For me and for my kids. I want to be around for a long time. It's amazing how kids can wake you up, is it just me? I mean before it was all about me, go out and eat whatever. Have fun, live life! Haha...had my kids....holy crap I'm fat! And really unhealthy!! I gotta be a better ME for my kids! Crazy how that changes.

After a close relative passed away from rhino cell carcinoma, I and many of my family members were bound and determined to get on the healthy road. We have been a health conscience family for the most part, but even more so after this tragic event. The same year my Father suffered heart failure, survived, but has to live forever with a defibrillator in his chest. These two recent events to two people I love deeply, struck a cord. As it should.

I personally have hypothyroid and chronic migraines, among other things. So, I have been visiting the doctor more than usual to figure out what could cause some of my issues, what She found was very interesting. A lot of people don't know that they have inflammation. Inflammation is the main cause of MANY diseases. So, to hear I had high inflammation, it FREAKED me out. Migraines - inflammation, body aches and pains - inflammation, arthritis - inflammation, can't lose weight? Probably inflammation. Allergies - inflammation. Dizzy? Guess what, it could be inflammation.
I'm not a doctor, but I do have all of the above. And all of my issues are caused by inflammation. Crazy huh?

So, what am I supposed to do and how fast can I get rid of it?!? I was instructed to go on a Mediterranean diet, which I love. And to cut out all foods that cause inflammation (you can find lists online) Cool! Got it! I can do that. I also added to my routine a cactus juice from Trivita. Which has been amazing. As well as Garcinia Cambogia, Leanology, and Sublingual B12.

I have been overweight for most of my adult life and had issues with high cholesterol in the last year or two. I would always go on diets and never see a change, and it was so frustrating!! Finally a doctor told me my issues besides thyroid, it was the inflammation and stress causing all of these problems. Since being on my routine (not very long by the way), I have not only lost weight, but I no longer have high cholesterol, or thyroid issues, all my levels are normal! It was baffling to me. I have a lot more weight to lose probably 40 lbs or so (I've lost a total of 30 lbs). But I feel encouraged to know that I'm healthy. I'm still on the path to health and always will be. I'm still working on my inflammation but I have 30+ years to get rid of. At least I am seeing the change, for the first time.

I am one who hates vitamin routines, or fitness routines, or eating routines....kind of rebellious I guess. But really, it isn't worth being rebellious or stubborn. Or lazy. If I have to suffer being on a routine, to grow old with my husband and kids, THAT is worth everything. I am not one who says, 'Well we are gonna anyways, might as well enjoy it.' Why not live healthy and live as long as possible? Your kids will respect you for it, love you more for it, and in turn live longer too because of your example. THAT is so much more satisfying than junk food. And I love junk food. But I deeply love my kids and family.

Stepping off my soap box...

So here's to health! I will be sharing some healthy meals for kids, along with smoothies, and lots of other things!

Currently: Writing this as my kids take an R&R, they are watching Sponge Bob....his laugh is so annoying...

Fun Mommy Ideas

I have not posted in a loooong while. I guess because my life has been and still is completely involved in my wonderful sons. They are almost 21 months old now, time has flown by!
They are into everything, messy, destructive little monsters they are. But tons of fun!!!
I am folding clothes, they are behind making a mess of something! I clean that up and then they are in the other room making another mess of something!
Anywhere from unfolding my clothes, getting into the garbage can and unloading that, to finding a pen and writing on the walls, or getting into Daddy's shoe collection (yes he is the one with shoes) and ripping apart the shoe boxes.
Trailing them is like trailing a tornado....DESTRUCTION!!!
I have been leaning new things for them to do lately to keep their hands occupied, without too much of a mess.
One use I have found for zip lock bags: Exploration bags and sensory bags.
One idea I used last week was finger painting! In a bag!
1 regular zip lock bag
2 colors of finger paint
Painting tape
All you do is:  2 globs each color into the bag, make sure it is zipped tight. Tape all edges to the window or sliding door and there you have it! So simple and the kids LOVE it! Best part, easy clean up!

Another thing I have been wanting to figure out what to do with was all these perfectly good boxes! Diapers boxes!! I go through a TON of diapers with twins. And always have used these boxes to send clothes to Goodwill or some sort of storing in our garage. Now I have an idea I am so excited about finding! Reusing diaper boxes for storage. You cover them with some cute designed paper or fabric.
Need:
1 diaper box that is in good shape
Scissors
Box Knife
Tape or glue
Cutely designed paper or fabric (amount depends on the size of box)

First cut off all open flaps. The top flaps, where you opened it.
Then cut off the little flap where the "handle" of the box is. Next take your paper, measure almost like wrapping a gift. Leave some room on all edges to be able to wrap around the edges, bottom and top ridge.
Next glue or tape smoothly against the box.
After completing the outside (bottom not necessary, your preference) pick a different fabric or paper color for the interior and outer rim (if you'd like). I personally didn't do the outer rim. But may add it later, what I did do was use scented paper! (Drawer liners) so that it keeps the room smelling good and the items inside.
Glue all of the interior paper or fabric down and you have a cute box to put stuff in! I am using mine for the boys' winter clothes.
Hope you can use these ideas. I will keep trying more ideas and post about it. Mistakes and not so great ideas sure to come!

5 months old: already traveled to another country!

5 months old and the boys have had their first long road trip to Mexico. They visited the beach for the first time, had a great time with their Tios and Tias and their Abuelita. It was a great trip. I was so impressed with the boys, they traveled so well.

To all the people wondering if Mexico is a safe place to go, we went through the Nogales/Arizona border and didn't have any problems. The trip was as simple as pie and we went all the way to Hermosillo and then to Bahia de Kino. There wasn't any random stops or anything that looked suspicious.

So I have a few things that I have used and have liked a lot, I also want to mix things up a bit and let you know about something I didn't like..I wasn't going to actually do that, but I have to complain about one item.

Just a quick update on how my boys are doing, they are starting to get their knees up to crawling position and rock back and forth, which is pretty exciting to watch. They are also giggling up a storm, which I love. I love being a Mom. I never thought I would say that. Before I had kids, I was one that was never going to have kids. I thought I wouldn't be a good Mom or that my life would change too much. Well my life has changed completely, but I love the change. I think I am doing ok in the Mom department as well. But I know I have so much to learn.

Okay on with this months recommendations of great baby gear!
1. Car seat strap covers. So one item I did find that is a must for babies and traveling is the car seat strap covers. I learned that as they get bigger the strap start to rub on their poor little necks. So these covers protect them from all the irritating rubbing from the straps. Plus they love to snuggle with them and chew on it.

2. Fisher Price Travel Swing. Another item I have found that has been great is the Fisher Price Zoo two in one travel swing. So far this very compact swing has traveled to Mexico with us and we also use it now every day as a bouncer and napping swing. I have recently tried another travel swing that I have to say, wasn't reliable. We got two of the Cosco Brand fold up swings and both have already fizzled out. We got them in March and after using them a couple times we found that they ate batteries very quickly and one of them fused out and is no longer in service, which is why we bought the Fisher Price swing. I am VERY happy with it and it was the same price as the Cosco brand swings. The Fisher Price swing has a lock clip so the seat stays in place while placing your baby in the swing, it has a vibration motor, has nice music, and a multi level swing speed. It also has a cute Rhino and baby Rhino dangling from a palm leaf. This swing is great. I was worried that my baby was too heavy for it, he's pushing 17 lbs. But he swings great in it and the swing doesn't act like its going to die...like the Cosco brand swings....2 Thumbs up for Fisher Price Brand!!

3. Kangaroo packs. My husband and I love to take our boys for a walk and soon we will be hiking with them as well. My brother in law and sister in law got us two of those Kangaroo back packs that can be in front or back. We have the Infantino carriers. It was good for when the babies were newborn 0-3 months and on up. Made it very easy to go shopping, walking, even out to eat! They are pretty easy to put on and very secure for your baby. A must for an active family!

4. Munchkin Arm & Hammer Diaper Pail. So if you aren't wanting to spend a bunch of money on a Diaper Genie, get the Munchkin Diaper pail. I have one and it is great! The diapers I put in there should be knocking out the neighborhood, but this inexpensive, little pail keeps the neighborhood safe and all horrible smells inside. When your pail is full (takes 2-3 days with twins, to fill it) you snap up the garbage bag and take it away. The pail is easy to use and conveniently sized so it doesn't take much room. Also it doesn't have a motor and is extremely light!

5. Entertainment Saucer. My husband and I picked up an entertainment saucer at our local Once Upon A Child and it was worth every penny. (which wasn't many)...They LOVE that thing. My guys love looking at all the animals, chew on the toys, spins the spinny rattle and jumps with excitement! Entertainment saucers are teethers, entertainers, exercisers, learning tools, and a feeding chair all in one! It really doesn't matter which one you get, because all of the ones I have seen are pretty similar. Babies love these gadgets. I started my guys in them at 4 months, some say not to start them in them so soon. But I don't see why not, personally. All they needed was a towel around them to keep them upright.

Well there are my 5 must haves for this stage. Being a Mom/ Parent is a lot of work. Trying to find what is best for your baby can be sometimes stressful. What is better, what isn't worth your money. What are other Mothers/ Parents recommending...are all questions I have had. So I am sure you have too if you are a first time Parent. Or maybe a second time parent wanting to try something new! I enjoy giving my take on the items I have used with my twin boys. I hope that it will help you in your shopping efforts in the future.
Hope you come back and take a look at what my boys are enjoying and comment if you have any suggestions or warnings!
Until next time!!

Parenting of Twins: Four Months Old

Four months already? But wasn't it only yesterday that I was going through my 27 hour extremely painful delivery?! Ummmm wait a second. Is there a pause button somewhere that I haven't discovered on them?

Although I really wish there was an actual pause button that came with every baby, there isn't. They grow way too fast and before you know it they are sitting up, walking, talking, dating, graduating, getting married, and having their own little babies of their own.

Even though my babies haven't even gotten to the sitting up on their own stage, they are still making tremendous achievements, well in my opinion. My little guys are now sitting up with a little support from me and their trusty Bumbo. They are rolling and scooting all over the place, especially when they are trying to get their favorite toy. They are holding onto things and playing with toys. It is amazing how only 3 months ago they couldn't do anything but poop, pee, burp, puke, eat, and sleep. Amazing how they learn so quickly.

As I am writing this, my baby Anthony is trying to roll in his crib looking at his fingers and feet. Very cute I must say. Both my boys are now noticing that that they don't have Mama all to themselves, they have this look like "Hey, wait! I have to share her with you?! When did this other baby get here??" Its so funny to watch one trying to interact with the other and the other not giving the one any attention.

Things are definitely starting to get more exciting, but things are also becoming a little more complicated since I have to entertain TWO at the same time. I know a couple of my cousins with twins can relate!
So, it is now that time to give you my recommendations of the month! I have found another 5 items that I need to tell you about!

1.Crackle Teethers. My first recommendation is the wonderful exciting Crackle Teethers! My babies are just now starting to get their buds and chewing up a storm! Constantly trying to chew on something, I wanted them to have something fun and entertaining to chew on. The first teether I got was a Crackle book with a little handle on it. They loved that, so I thought 'what about something more cuddly?'. I went out and found two little animals that are cuddly, crackly, and chewy! They are very satisfied and love their little Crackle Buddies!

2. Bottle Huggers. These are (I have found) hard to find, everywhere I go they are sold out. But they are found online mostly. These huggers are little plush animals that have an opening to stuff the bottles in through the mouth. It keeps the bottle warm and it helps your baby hold the bottle easily. I thought 'Hey if they are going to be looking at a bottle, might as well make it fun to look at!' And they love them! So naturally I recommend them.

3. Thermometer. I have used for the first 4 months of my babies life a wonderful little gadget. It is the Safety 1st prograde digital thermometer. It has three different attachments for Under Arm, Rectal, and Oral. That way you are prepared for every stage. It only take a couple seconds for it to read your babies temperature and it has a red light to let you know if the temp is too high. It also reminds you to clean the prong afterward. It has a pretty blue light on the face of the Thermometer. Another great addition is it keeps all the prongs safely stored in the back of the unit, so they don't get lost or misplaced. I absolutely love this in comparison to other meters. I used the older kind that takes literally forever to take the temperature and when your baby is squirming and crying, that is no fun. I am so glad got this fast, organized, digital thermometer!! It is definitely a must!

4. Entertainment. Another great item that is a must is a play mat! My Aunt got the babies the Fisher Price Rain-forest play mat, it has music, lights, lots of animals to look at and touch, crackle leaves, and a mirror. The music has a setting where if the attachments are played with, the music will play, or you can just leave it playing. It also has soothing rain-forest sounds as well. My babies can play there for quite a while, they are so entertained with all the things to play with and look at. They practice their rolling and scooting and they have even started to play together on the mat. They have discovered each other and love playing together 'in the rain forest' They particularly love the cute giraffe that peers down at them and all the rattles. One thing I love about this mat, is that it easily folds away, the attachments are removable so you can clean and move them around to the mat or above on the 'rainbow' bars. If you don't get this particular one, make sure the one you get has plenty for your baby to look at and play with and lights are always fun for them as well.

5. BUMBO!! Now that my boys are able to sit with a little help, I went out and got a Bumbo. At first I was skeptical, I didn't think that the boys would be able to sit in it yet, but the box says once your baby starts to support their head or sit with help, the Bumbo will work for them. So, I decided to try it. Aaaand its true! The boys love sitting in it and they look like they are thinking 'look at me I am a big boy now!' You can set this Bumbo anywhere and it is sturdy! I put it on the couch, floor bed, and it is sturdy enough to keep them in there. I do recommend you put it on the most sturdy area or a flat surface. I would never leave the room while they are in it either. The Bumbo has a tray you can add to it as well, where you can put their toys on there or when they are ready they can eat their snacks there too!

If you're pregnant, have babies, or take care of children I hope this blog can be helpful to you. If you would like to comment please do, I love to hear feedback! Whether you are in agreement with my recommendations or not!
Also there is an event coming up in April 'Mommy and Baby Play date', if you would like more information please contact me. Also join our group A Mommies World on Facebook.
Come back soon!

Month Three

Well the boys are 14 weeks old. I have found some more wonderful gadgets that I absolutely cannot live without. These last 14 weeks have been such a whirlwind of learning, extreme fatigue, non stop feeding-changing-shushing, and utter chaos. BUT I have found, now that they can see more clearly, interact with me, and want to touch and hold things everything has been a lot more exciting around here.

We are now finally getting 5 hours of sleep on a regular basis. The horrible '2 hours of sleep' days are over, well at least until they start teething. So my sanity is doing much better. The boys are now lifting their heads and looking around at their environment. They smile when we talk to them and just act like they want to giggle. But not much giggling is happening yet. They are cooing up a storm, they have conversations with me with the cutest expressions, I am sure the topic is something very intelligent and intellectual. 14 weeks old and they are the light of my life, I just love being around them.

Here are my 5 recommendations for this stage of baby life:

1. Bottle Warmer. I have found that especially in the first 3 months, with all the night feedings, making bottles when I am half asleep was no fun. So I thought a bottle warmer would be great! We got the BabyPro the First Years Bottle warmer, it warms 1 bottle in 3 minutes. It has 2 little water holders, it has a removable cooler for 2 bottles with an ice pack to keep your next two bottles cool. I have found that premixing all my bottles before bed, setting them in the fridge. And 2 in the cooler works great. As long as your baby is eating every couple hours. The ice pack only last a couple hours. So I advise that you buy an extra one, to switch out the ice packs every time you feed a bottle. This warmer is a very handy little device to have if you are bottle feeding your baby(ies). I recommend cleaning the unit each day, only because you will get a funky grime on the burner if you don't. Which I use a rag or sponge for.

I keep my warmer next to the crib, it isn't loud at all. Its easy to use just poor the water in (pre-measured), click the switch and it turns off when the water is gone. The steam heats your bottles exactly to the right temperature. There is a little technique to doing that though. Took some practice to know which bottles needed a certain amount of water to boil, but you get the hang of it pretty quickly. You can find this warmer at Target and Babies R Us. Also Buy Buy Baby.

2. Goats Milk. I had some challenges after the boys were born with my health. I was in the hospital and was put on many medications. Which resulted in me not being able to breast feed my babies and could only pump just a little at a time. So I went to formula. Tried Similac which gave my boys severe stomach issues, tried Enfamil same thing plus severe yeast infections. Plus my boys were sensitive to cows milk. So I said fooey on all the formula and heard about goats milk. With the right vitamins added, goats milk is the closest to breast milk in nutrition that you can get. So I got some advice from some naturpath doctors and went out and bought all the goats milk I could find. I buy Mayenberg Goats Milk, found at Walmart, Sprouts, or Whole Foods. You can get it in cans or refrigerated. I buy both. Cans are found in the (yes strange) baking aisle. And the refrigerated is found where the milk is found. I add Folic Acid, DHA, Multi Vitamins, and probiotics to the milk and the boys are sooooooooo much better now that they are on the goats milk. A cousin of mine had a similar experience. She also has twins and her boys were getting very gassy and fussy on the formula when she started weening them off of breast milk. She is trying the Goats milk now. She found it at a goat farm near her. Make sure that if you do find a goat farm with fresh milk, make sure it is pasteurized. Buying it fresh from a farmer can save you lots of $$. I spend about $15 on a half gallon, my cousin spends about $7 on a half gallon from the farm.

If you would like the instructions on how I was taught to prepare the goats milk and for the vitamin info, contact me or comment. I am happy to help your babies get healthier and happier! Check out http://www.meyenberg.com/ for more information about the product.

3. Playtex Drop-ins. I love the Playtex bottles. The babies are less gassy (due to air in the bottle), the nipples don't cause me problems (leaking, popping, bubbles), and the drop ins are disposable, which means less bottles to clean. I use both kinds of bottles but I prefer the drop ins over anything. They are a little more expensive if you add buying the drop ins every week. But I have learned to recycle a little and use the drop ins 2 or three times, instead of once. What I mean by "popping" with the old, regular nipples on regular bottles, I have found popping occurs with a certain amount of suck pressure. Where the nipples will be sucked into the bottle with the pressure. Scared me the first time it happened, I thought my baby sucked the nipple into his throat because of the sound it made. Very scary, but all was well when I found the nipple inverted into the bottle.

'Pros' on the Drop ins: less air bubbles, easier to clean, no popping, and no leaking! 'Cons': a little more garbage, and harder to use with the bottle warmer.

I get my drop-ins from Target or Walmart. But to check out Playtex bottles and go to www.playtex.com/bottles/dropins

4. Boppy. I use the Boppy for many things, with twins it is hard to feed both at the same time, so I have used the Boppy when it comes time to feed them both. I love to hold them and cuddle but there are times that they both want a bottle NOW and I have learned to just set them in the boppy and feed both of them at the same time. They are also good for tummy time. I am always present when I do this, but I place them both tummy down on the middle of the Boppy and place their hands and head on the highest part of the Boppy. They have strengthened their neck muscles and really enjoy looking around while on their Boppy. They are good for those TV times (if you do that) when you are folding clothes or other "in the room" chores you have, you can place them in the Boppy and let them watch their educational program. As they sit there content, you get stuff done!! Helps when breast feeding too, a lot more support with a Boppy. Get a Boppy you will be happy you did!

5. The Fisher Price 2 in 1 projector Mobile. I have the Precious Planet mobile, which my boys love. They start to jibber jabber and kick and wiggle out of excitement, when looking at it. My boys aren't big enough yet, but my friends daughter loves this mobile as well, she is a year and a half and can turn it on herself now, when she is in the crib. Which keeps her entertained. There are 3 different sound options: soothing nature sounds, heart beat, and music. You can change the volume of the sound and you have a choice whether to have sounds, projector, and turning mobile. Or you have the option of turning the projector off and just have the mobile and music. Or you can just have the music! The great part to this mobile is when your baby is older and can reach the spinning mobile, you can take it off and just have the sound/projector box. So it is safe for all ages.

Well there's my 5 top picks for the 3rd month of my sons life. I have a few things I am trying out right now, that I think will be great. So I will let you know the results next month!

Thanks for reading and please comment your opinion as well on any of these products.

First 2 months

As a new Mom of twins I had many questions, such as ' What products are best', 'What are the essentials?', 'What will make my life less complicated with twins?' I had so many questions that I could have written a book. Thankfully family and friends were there to help! But from my own experience I would like to share with you every month the products I have found that makes being a Mom soooo much easier and when things are easier, being a Mom can be so much more fun!

Here is just a quick blurb about who I am. I am a 28 year old first time Mom, with 10 week old twin boys. I have been married 7 years as of January 30th, this year. My husband and I were quite surprised with getting so lucky with twin boys, when we weren't even planning on children. I quit working to raise my 2 boys and I want to provide them with the best of care as they grow up.

I am very used to a busy lifestyle, I worked as an Event Coordinator and was working at all hours of the day. But I have to say taking care of twin boys has been my biggest and most challenging job yet. I do have to say it is also the most rewarding job I have ever had.

I am just a regular new Mom wanting to help out other Moms out there. I will be posting my top 5 choices of the most helpful products to use on or for your baby or babies. I hope you enjoy my blog and please comment if you'd like and share your experiences with these products or ask me a question, I would love to help you out!

Here are the top 5 items I have personally used and have really enjoyed for the first 2 months of my boys' life.

1. Moby Wrap. I Love this! When my hands are full with babies and I need to do laundry or tidy up. I just put on my Moby Wrap and cuddle my baby! They fall asleep instantly when I put them in this. It also helps with colic. I used it to go shopping, walking, cleaning, wherever!! I recommend that you don't wear something too warm underneath because you do get pretty warm with baby snuggled up to you. I highly recommend this wrap, its easy to put on and nice to have baby real close to you. Here is the link to order one: http://www.blissbaby.fatcow.com/

2. Burt's Bees baby products. I have a very sensitive baby, he can't use the normal baby products. He breaks out in a rash and becomes very irritated. The only products I use on them now is Burt's Bees baby Products. They have powder, lotion, oil, diaper rash cream, and other items. Plus it smells yummy and the babies love the taste of it. They just suck away on their fingers. It's all natural, so it isn't harmful. You can find these products at your local Whole Foods, Sprouts, or Babies R Us. http://www.burtsbees.com/

3. Summer Infant Kiddopotomus SwaddleMe swaddler. I use these ALL the time. My boys love to be swaddled. They slept better and became less fussy when I used these. Plus they are so much easier to use than trying to figure out how to swaddle them in regular receiving blankets. They work best with newborns. You can find them anywhere. I have found them at WalMart, Target, or Babies R Us.

4. Fisher Price Papasan Cradle Swing. I use this product every day. With two babies it is hard to rock both babies to sleep at the same time. For some reason we weren't born with 4 arms. when I have 2 crying babies I use my swings! They work great and replicate how we would rock them. They Especially are great when you have company or little projects around the house to do and you need to entertain your baby or keep them sleeping soundly. This swing has a fun little mobile and a mirror for the babies to look at when on. It has 4 different sound settings, from music to nature sounds. 7 swing settings as the baby gets bigger and heavier you will need to use a stronger setting. These swings are not too loud and babies really do love them. They also change directions, you can either swing them side to side or front to back. I suggest before you get one, have a good space for it where it won't get in the way. It takes up a good 5'x3' area. Also don't leave your baby unattended for too long. Always keep a watchful eye. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3090973

5. Itzbeen timers. Helps you track of the last diaper change, feeding, nap, and it has a misc. button for medications or perhaps another babies feedings. It also has a helpful light and a clock. As well as a tracker for left and right breast feedings. I love this handy tool. I use to keep everything written down on a piece of paper but now it is less time consuming. And I am all about that! http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3039774

With twins I am constantly looking at second hand baby supply stores and a lot of these items I have found at those stores. Some items not even out of the box and for a fraction of the cost. So go out to your local second hand stores, I recommend Once Upon a Child, Love Child, and Twice as Nice. If you feel more comfortable with brand new, then the links above should help you out.

I hope that these recommendations are helpful to you, whether you have one baby, twins, or more! Please come back and read my future blogs. Also look us up on Face Book: A Mommies World. Join other moms in their journey through Motherhood.
